Workshops

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m passionate about my creature comforts. I’m also unequivocal about needing them to be good for my body and kind to the planet. That left me two choices: either I dish out the 20%-30% extra cash for “green” products (some of which still contained toxic preservatives and synthetics)….or I learn how to make my own.
I ended up doing literally years of research into the best (and most fun) ways to make the lotions and potions I desired. Let me be frank: I’m not reinventing the wheel. I’m relying on the knowledge of my foremothers as well as that of established herbalists, naturopaths and doctors. In fact, I WANT to use old recipes– after all, it’s the ones that have survived the centuries that are most likely to be powerful and good for us.
Could you find the recipes I teach elsewhere? Probably. But it will take you time and effort. I encourage you to take that time and make the effort because the rewards are plenty. In fact, I’m offering these workshops to help empower you– to help you see that DIY is not messy or fussy or boring. If done right, it can be fun, creative and social.
Come take a workshop, meet some awesome people and  see for yourself!
Fanny goes Frugal: learning to make cheap household soaps

Fanny goes Frugal: learning to make cheap household soaps

* Fanny goes Frugal: Sick of paying the “green premium” for eco-friendly cleaning products? Don’t switch back to the toxic stuff! Just learn to make your own… for pennies. I’ll teach you how to make your own super effective laundry detergent and dishwasher (or tub and tile-scouring) soap that costs approximately $0.01 per washload!! Plus, learn to make a non-toxic all-purpose spray cleaner that is safe and effective in the kitchen and on glass surfaces. $15

Organic, fair-trade and toxin-free: still looks and feels like lotion!

* Skintastic: Make your own delicious, rich body lotion or butter. Also, learn an ancient and super-effective cleansing method for the face–one that uses a special blend of oils that will calm even the most troubled skin. Also make your own body polish, face tightening mask and toner using only organic (and ideally fair trade) products.  $20

Chamomile acts as an astringent for the scalp and helps control excess greasiness.

* Heads up: I’ll share my traditional Indian hair trick for glossy, dandruff-free hair. Also, two easy make-it-yourself shampoo recipes–one for a dry shampoo (that you can use at work or if you’re in the hospital), one for a regular frequent-use shampoo. Each participant will learn how to customize an oil blend that targets their specific hair type and any problems they might have. You also learn a relaxing massage technique and as a bonus, go home with a recipe for a nutritional supplement that targets hair and skin! $15

No more need to kiss your money goodbye when you desire toxin-free toothpaste!

* Kiss me you fool!: This workshop is all about oral hygiene and having soft, kissable lips. We’ll learn how to make a vanilla-velvet lip balm, an all-natural toothpaste and an all-natural breath freshener. Never again will you have to pay $6 for a tube of natural toothpaste! Plus you’ll be able to customize your paste depending on your taste, whether you’re using homeopathy, etc. XOXO! $15

* For Boys  (and the women that love them)

Boys are wonderful--and need pampering too!

Learn to make your own delicious and soothing shave balm. Also discover the joys of blending and customizing your (or your favourite boy’s) aftershave. And finally, make your own soft-hold hair gel that actually makes your hair healthier each time you wear it! The gel can also be made into an anti-frizz serum for dry, damaged and curly hair. $15

Pucker up for some Rrrrromance!

Pucker up for some Rrrrromance!

*RRRromance

Learn to make a sensual massage balm that’s appropriate for both lovers and babies. Learn to make an organic, fairtrade, lickable chocolate-rum body paint (mmm). I’ll also use my years as a “sex and relationships” columnist to  share 3 fun projects that require only the most basic crafting skills (can you hold a pair of scissors?) that will inject romance and fun into your relationship. We’ll discuss how to organize sexy treasure hunts, naughty fortune cookies and more! Special friends welcome! $20

Price: $15 per workshop per person (except Skintastic and Rrromance which are $20 because they’re a little longer and feature 5 recipes/projects.)

What’s included:

*I will provide printouts with the recipes and supporting information as well as all the ingredients necessary.

*Participants will take home a small sample of each product they learn how to make.

* You’ll also be able to access my resource list which I’ve compiled after hours of research. This way, finding every ingredient in your recipe (and discovering which store sells it for less) becomes a snap. I provide addresses, phone numbers and the French translations for each ingredient so you’ll actually be able to ask for the correct item.

* Practical tips like how to control the initial high cost of buying ingredients, how to make time to actually make your own stuff, and how to store it and package it in a way that’s planet-friendly but helps extend its shelf life.

Small mason jars provide the perfect leak-proof containers in which to take home oils, shampoos and other goodies. You can also use empty plastic water bottles for the shampoo.

What you have to bring

* A few mason jars or empty tupperware-style containers so you can take home samples of your recipe. I do provide some nice containers, but charge $1 each. This way, if you forget or don’t have enough containers, you’re covered.

Where it all happens

Workshops are usually held on the Plateau (at the Lululemon on St Denis, corner MaryAnne) or in the Mile End at the Naada Yoga Studio.

I also offer private workshops, which can be fun for hen parties, bridesmaids’ treats or just an afternoon of infotainment. These are even more fun, becase you can customize your workshop and decide what you want to learn.

And finally, if you know you’re going to take more than one workshop, you might want to purchase a 3-pack. This allows you to take any three workshops of your choice for $40 (this applies even to the two $20 workshops.) The 3-pack link takes you directly to Paypal which is the most secure way to pay over the internet. Alternatively, you can pay, in cash, at the next workshop you attend.
