A little while ago, there was an email going around Facebook that asked people to list 20 random things about themselves, share them with friends and then get the friends to do the same. I found it an absolutely fascinating exercise and found myself looking at even close friends in a new light after discovering interesting facets of their personalities that I hadn’t cottoned on to yet. The simple life
21 JulHow do you go from being a consumer to becoming a citizen? As in how do you go from being someone who uses up the earth’s limited resources and go back to being someone who’s a contributing member of society–someone who actively builds and contributes to a community?
This is a question that I’ve been pondering quite a lot lately. And I suspect it’s one that’s on a lot of people’s minds just now. Not because we’ve suddenly grown a collective conscience, but likely because of this global recession we’re in. It’s forced many of us–me included– to hop off the treadmill and reassess.

The pleasures of looking up!
Try not to hate me, but I have the summer off. In Montreal. This means time to enjoy a gazillion free festivals and street events and parks and local markets. But I won’t gloat. Really.
This time off comes as a result of the cuts at the CBC (my position was made redundant, at least for the summer). So technically, it’s bad news, I suppose. The truth of the matter was that I’d sensed the changes coming all the way back in December 2008. So I’d been preparing and planning… and saving. And by the time the news came, I was looking forward to it. (more…)
